If your garage door is only opening mid-way or behaving erratically when opening and closing, you may need to reset your motor’s travel limit programming.
The travel limit sets how far your door goes up and down. Incorrect programming could prevent the door from opening and closing all the way or cause the door to open again after hitting the ground.
If your garage door won’t open or close to where you want, the way to fix the issue is to reset the travel limits.
There are many different types of garage door motors, so it is best to consult your owner’s manual for your motor model or get help with a service visit from the team at Pinnacle Garage Doors.
Setting Travel Limits on a Merlin Silent Drive Essential
The Merlin Silent Drive Essential MR655MYQ and Merlin Silent Drive Elite MR855MYQ are roller door motors suited to single and double garage roller doors and have similar programming.
Here are the instructions for setting the travel limits. For a visual guide, follow along with Blair in the video further below.
Please note: Make sure the door is clear of any obstruction. Ensure your hands are away from any moving parts before activating the door.
Refer to the control panel diagram above for programming guidance.
Setting Right- or Left-Hand Operation
Ensure the door is positioned halfway and the opener is engaged (out of manual mode).
Turn the opener Power on, the courtesy light will turn on. During the programming sequence, the courtesy light will flash at half strength.
- Press the “P” button for 5 seconds until LED 3 flashes and either LED 2 or LED 1. For a Right-hand setting the LED 2 will flash, and for a Left-hand setting the LED 1 will flash.
- To change to the opposite setting, press the “S” button, and the opposite LED will flash.
- When the correct hand setting is selected, press and release the “P” program button to accept this setting.
Setting the Door Limits
- Press and hold the “UP” button until the door reaches the desired OPEN position (You can toggle between the “UP” and “DN” buttons to move the door to the correct position. Make sure there is enough room for your vehicle to pass under).
- Press and release the “P” program button to accept this setting.
- Press and hold the “DN” button until the door reaches the desired CLOSED position (You can toggle between the UP and DN buttons to move the door to the correct position).
- Press and release the “P” program button to accept this setting. (LED 2 should flash to indicate you are now in Force Learn mode).
Setting the Force Automatically
- Press and release the “UP” button. The door will travel to the OPEN position with LED 2 flashing.
- Press and release the “DN” button. The door will travel to the CLOSED position with LED 1 flashing. When fully closed, LED 1 will stop flashing and the courtesy light will change to full power.
The process is now complete.

So today we’re going to learn how to reset the limits on a Merlin Silent Drive Essential.
Turn the power on, have the door halfway, then put it into automatic so it’s locked.
Press the program button. When the light is on this side, it indicates that it is set up for the motor on the left-hand side, inside looking out of the door.
To confirm it is on the left-hand side, or to change it, if you want to change it (press button), now it’s on the right. But we’re going back to the left, left-hand side. Confirm it, program.
Press this to go up. It is a bit of a slow sequence to do it, but his way you can iron out any bugs, if there’s scratching or weird noises happening.
I like not to set it too high up to the top, gives it some movement to roll down the tracks properly.
Press the program to confirm your open setting and then run it down.
This is an older door, so obviously a few noises coming from it, but it’s in reasonable condition.
This motor can lift a door up to 13.5 square metres. It has a 5-year warranty. It’s a good motor.
Once you’ve closed it reasonably firmly on the ground, press the program button again. The light still flashing means it hasn’t been confirmed. Confirmed. Now it’s going to go through a sequence up and down now setting the force margin that the motor can lift and push down before it stops or feels like it hits an obstruction.
As I say, not all the way to the top. A bit further down is good. The downlight is flashing now, so press the button. It’s still flashing because it’s in that setting mode. And once it closes it will be its setting completed and the lights will go off. It’s all confirmed. Close it up and off you go.
Thanks for watching.
